Equifax: Updates on the 2017 Data Breach Compensation

The aftermath of the 2017 Equifax data breach continues to make waves. The incident led to fines of £11 million by UK authorities and $800 million by US authorities. The breach affected 14 million people in the UK and a staggering 147 million in the United States.

Following this catastrophic event, a class-action settlement was finalized in 2020 for USA, allocating $425 million for compensation related to the exposure of personal data and identity theft. Claims for compensation were accepted until January 2023, while free support services for identity recovery will remain available until January 2029.

This December, compensation payments are ongoing, issued via electronic prepaid cards that can be activated online.
